The beach Punta Roca is located on the outskirts of the city of El Puerto de La Libertad, just a few steps away from the services and attractions offered by this local town in growth.
The waves of Punta Roca, or “La Punta”, as it is called by the local surfers, breaks to the right on a rocky bed and are considered to be one of the 10 best places in the world for surfing according to the pros. In fact, professional surfers who have ridden them compared them to the famous Jeffrey Bay waves in South Africa. With the additional appeal attraction of its warm water, making wetsuits unnecessary.
Due to its power and speed, this wave is suitable for advanced and experienced level surfers.
From the shore you can see how the wave breaks about 300 meters out in the sea, creating an endless line with a wide wall to perform all kinds of maneuvers and several sections of wave tunnels that bring out screams of emotion.
The wave can be ridden almost all year round thanks to its consistency. But, if you want to get to know its epic character you must visit it between March and August when the waves become a product of the South Pacific Ocean storms reaching El Salvador. Capable of withstanding 12 feet high (4 meters) waves, but the best time is when conditions of the waves are between 4 and 8 feet height(1.5 to 2.5 meters) and the direction of the waves are from the southwest.
When you arrive at Punta Roca, local children and young people will offer to take care of your car and your belongings. You will also see local photographers who will gladly freeze time for you with a picture immortalizing the moment of a lifetime.
Punta Roca works at any tide but, you must be careful with its rocky bottom, especially with what the locals call “mama roca”, a boulder rock that sticks out of the water at low tide.
Due to its consistency and the quality of the waves, Punta Roca has been the scene of numerous international surfing events, including a world’s masters and several competitions on the Latin American circuit, ALAS, and several qualifiers (QS), for the World Tour.
Besides surfing, you should not miss the chance to visit El Puerto de La Libertad. An energetic and cheerful city with the smell in the air of the sea which offers everything the traveler may need. Getting to the beach Punta Roca from San Salvador is simple. Take the highway to El Puerto de La Libertad. After 20 kilometers you will arrive at the city of El Puerto which you must go through heading west, one block before the Chilama river bridge, which marks the limit of the city. Once here, turn left and keep going for about 800 meters until you reach this fabulous destination.
